What is the Gas Safe Register?

It is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out gas work to be registered with Gas Safe Register. This is the only official registration body for gas safety in the home or workplace and list of gas engineers legally able to perform work in the UK.

What They Do

They make sure that all of the 120,000 gas engineers on the register are gas safe and qualified to work with gas. They check the competence of the gas engineer, inspect their work, enforce regulations and deal with complaints about unsafe work. Their aim is to improve and maintain gas safety to the highest standards so that rogue traders do not get the chance to gamble with people’s lives.

Work that Needs to be Carried out by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer

Only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to install, maintain, repair and service gas appliances, boilers, hobs, ovens or fires in your home and they must have a Gas Safe Register ID card.

Who Runs the Gas Safe Register?

Gas Safe Register is run by Capita Gas Registration and Ancillary Services Limited, a division of Capita Group Plc.

It is vital that you get a Gas Safe Registered engineer to carry out any gas work you may have and you should never, under any circumstances, attempt any kind of DIY gas work.

• Check online- enter the engineer’s or business's license number into the ‘Check an Engineer’ service on the Gas Safe Register website. Click here
• Check by Phone- call Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500
• Check their Gas Safe Register ID card- always ask to see the engineer’s card which displays their unique license number and the type of gas work they are qualified to do.
  Illegal Gas Workers

Around 250,000 jobs are carried out illegally each year by workers that are not on the Gas Safe Register. By doing this they are putting people’s lives at risk. Illegal gas work can lead to a gas leak, fire, explosion and exposure to carbon monoxide, all of which can be fatal.
