Capital 95.8’s live broadcast at Pimlico was a run-away success
20th September 2008
Hundreds dragged themselves out of bed early on Friday to witness Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon broadcast Capital Radio 98.5fm's Breakfast Show live from Pimlico Plumbers.

On the eve of her appearance on the BBC's hit TV show Strictly Come Dancing new girl Lisa was calmly sitting at the mic as Johnny dived out of his cab to make the show's 6am start-time.

But the moment the ‘on air' sign lit up the fun began for the crowds who packed into the Pimlico depot to see the charity show broadcast in aid of Help a London Child.

Johnny may be a huge favourite but it was Lisa who everyone wanted to meet.  And when her Strictly Ballroom partner Brendon Cole dropped in for an impromptu dance class the children in the audience went wild with excitement.

The atmosphere inside the makeshift radio studio was electric, at times forcing the ever vocal Johnny to discover new levels of volume in order to be heard above the enthusiastic crowd of local school children, businesses, community groups, and of course Pimlico Plumbers.

During the 3-hour show the radio stars and audience alike were kept well fed thanks to food parcels from the likes of Burger King, Krispy Kreme, Innocent drinks and Fruitdrop, as well as Pimlico's own canteen.

The show was a huge success and everyone present had a great time meeting the stars, getting autographs signed and photos taken with them during breaks in the live broadcast.

Pimlico MD Charlie Mullins, who hosted the show two years ago and this year donated £50,000 to HALC to bring it back for an encore performance, said: "This has been a fantastic day for everyone concerned.  As a company we try to put a little bit back into the community and this is a great, fun way to do it.

"Help a London Child is a great charity and it's so good to see so many of the groups that it has supported over the years here today.

"When I see how much the kids have enjoyed the show this morning it really puts a smile on my face and makes be realise that all the hard work that everyone has put in to putting the show on today has been worth while."

The record bid will help HALC, which has raised more than £20 million over 30 years, continue its work of banishing poverty from the lives of some of London's most underprivileged children.
