  1. When deciding what company to employ choose one with a good, well established reputation and references that can be checked out.

  2. Only use a company that is prepared to fully guarantee their workmanship.

  3. Try to use a company that has an established industry reputation - industry awards are a good indicator on a company's ability to perform.

  4. Always make sure you are going to have fully qualified and experienced tradesmen working on your job.

  5. Only ever employ tradesmen who are members of the appropriate trade association - in the case of plumbing, this is the Institute of Plumbers.

  6. Make sure you use a company that won't charge you for hidden extras, such as callouts; travelling time; excessive mark-ups on materials; congestion or parking.

  7. Always use a company whose operatives carry photo identification and have been vetted with a CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) check.

  8. Only use a company that comes with a recommendation.

  9. Only use a company that has a verifiable address and operates from a landline.

  10. Only use a company thatdoesn'thave anyCounty Court judgements lodged against it.

  11. Make sure there is a good level of understanding between you and your tradesman and that he is clear about exactly what you want done.

  12. Always get an estimate of how much a job will cost or the hourly rate you will be charged before giving the go-ahead for work to start.

  13. Make sure payment is not required until the job has been completed andyou aresatisfied with the work and an invoicehas been presented.
