Job Profile of a Plumber

Basically, the job profile of a plumber involves the installation and maintenance of piping systems that are used for a variety of applications. So a plumber is the technician who carries out such duties. The piping systems may be used to carry industrial products, sewage, or drinking water.

It is said that the term plumber was derived during the Roman Empire. During those times, lead was used to manufacture pipes. In Latin, lead is known as ‘plumbum’ and the technician was called ‘plumburius’.
Plumbers usually have certifications whereby they operate as members of particular unions. And before they can operate, they need to be licensed.

After years of constant work that demonstrates one's expertise, someone may become what is known as a Master Plumber. A Master Plumber may be skilled in all areas of plumbing or highly specialized in a given field. These tradesmen are in a position to offer consultancy services.

Plumbers operate under tight codes in order to ensure high standards of service. Poor plumbing may create a lot of health problems, in case water systems are affected. The plumbing codes are meant to prevent such happenings. There are some trades that work hand in hand with plumbing, such as pipe and gas fitting.
Plumbers normally earn relatively well and they have good job security. Those who are experienced in welding have even better chances of securing jobs.

The majority of plumbers often start in the profession by helping professionals in their duties. Some of them may have not undergone formal training, although this is an important step. This is because learning from experienced master plumbers is considered to offer sufficient training. Comprehensive training is often received from apprenticeship programmes.
However, in many places, a plumber has to take some tests before being licensed. Then they will need to meet requirements for insurance and bonding. There are no skill tests necessary.

However, technical certificates may not suffice to qualify you as a plumber, depending on where you operate from. You may not be able to take or complete the tests if you have such problems as colour blindness. It is advisable for you to secure an attachment soon after enrolling for these certification tests. This means that you need to constantly have updated curriculum vitae.
Plumbing is not something that only men engage in. There are many professional female plumbers and some organizations actually encourage female participation in the plumbing industry.
The duties that a plumber carries out will depend on where the work is being done. Some of the duties include installation and repair of heating systems, drainage, and water supply; fixing air conditioning systems, fitting materials that are weather-proof to various places; installing home appliances; and servicing central heating systems.
A plumber makes use of a variety of tools, some of which are hand-powered. Plumbing at times needs cutting through walls, which needs caution in order to avoid such things as electrical wiring.
While many people associate a plumber with the unclogging of drainage systems, plumbing actually involves much more than this. Plumbers play important roles, even in computer-chip manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries.
